It is the 1920's: Mama Rose, June and Louise are trying to make it as entertainers in a time between the death of vaudeville and the birth of burlesque. Suggested by the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, this classic includes such favorites as “Let Me Entertain You” and “Everything's Coming Up Roses.”

Audition Requirements
Please bring a resume and picture (if you have it) and a list of all potential conflicts including travel, etc. Please prepare about 1 minute of a song – no songs from the show. Bring sheet music in the correct key (accompanist provided). You may also sing to an “instrumental only” (no vocals) CD. NO acappella. Be prepared to do a cold reading from the script if asked. Important: Please wear comfortable clothing for dance. No appointment necessary. Open Call Auditions. No AEA and there is NO PAY.

Character BreakdownRose: 35+ (Alto with belt) The epitome of stage mothers
Louise: 16 – 22 (Mezzo plus tap and jazz) Rose’s older, brow-beaten daughter. Has a crush on Tulsa. Louise is required to perform a tasteful, burlesque strip tease, with emphasis on the “tease.”
June: 15- 20 (Alto plus tap and jazz) The older she gets, the less she enjoys being her mother’s trained monkey.
Herbie: 40 - 60 (Baritone) Rose’s agent and suitor. A gentle man with an ulcer.
Tulsa: 16 - 25 (Baritone, tap & ballet ideal) One of June’s boy chorus dancers. Very “boy next door” and very talented. Loves June.
Baby June: 8 – 10 (child belt, tap) Very overproduced young girl- cute, and fake.
Baby Louise: 8 – 10 (tap) June’s “less-talented” older sister.
Tessie Tura: 20 – 40’s (Mezzo belt, balletic moves) Veteran burlesque dancer who shares her dressing room with Louise.
Mazeppa: 20s – 40s (Alto belt, ability to play trumpet an asset) burlesque dancer.
Electra: 20s – 40s. (Mezzo belt) Also burlesque dancer with a gimmick all her own.
Miss Cratchitt: any age. Producer’s secretary who’s seen it all.
4 Newsboys: 8-12 (tap with minimum 2 years ballet and jazz) back Baby June’s childhood act.
4 Farm Boys: 16-21(tap with minimum 2 years ballet and jazz) back June’s later act.
4 Hollywood Blondes: 16-21 (tap with minimum 2 years ballet and jazz) back Louise’s act.
Children for Uncle Jocko audition sequence: Boys and girls ages 8-12, who can play a band instrument (clarinet, etc.) and young girl to portray Balloon Girl.
Ensemble Male singers who move to cover various male character roles (Uncle Jocko, Papa, Mr.Goldstone, Cigar, etc.).
Ensemble Female singers who move for additional showgirls and various roles.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS
Curly- Male Lead. A young, charming, good looking, old western cowboy. Very likable and instantly grabs the female audience with his good looks and suave persona. Needs to demand presence and energy while on stage.
Must have good stage presence, chemistry with Laurey, confidence, and strong singing voice. Some dance
Laurey- Female Lead. Young and beautiful with an attitude. Wants to be looked at as a self supported woman and yet yearns for Curly's love. Is very quick-witted with her comebacks at Curly.
Must have good stage presence, chemistry with Curly, confidence, and a strong singing voice. Some dance
Aunt Eller- Old with an attitude, and a great sense of humor. Eller is smart and knows how to deal with people, especially the ones in this town. Can be played over the top and sung with a character voice. Some dance
Will Parker- Very energetic and good looking, this young cowboy makes up for his lack of brains with energy and charisma. Will is instantly likable and charming, always needs to make the audience smile. Can be tough but gets extra lovable when Ado Annie is around.
Must have great stage presence, chemistry with Ado Annie, confidence, likability, and a strong voice. Must Dance
Ado Annie- Very energetic and cute, this farmer’s daughter is the Love to Will’s heart. Ado Annie is lovable and sweet but she loves attention, sometimes too much. Not very bright but makes up for it with her good looks and happy attitude.
Must act very cute and loving, chemistry with Will, confidence on stage, a strong singing voice. Some dance
Ali Hakim- A cart peddler who roams the state trying to make money off of cheap items. Will do whatever it takes to make a buck, which sometimes gets him into trouble. When he is in trouble, he is quick to use his dry sense of humor and witty remarks to get himself out of it.
Must have good stage presence, confidence, and good sense of humor. Some singing (can be done with a character voice). Some movement
Jud- Villain of the show. Very large and intimidating man. The audience should always be a little afraid of him. He isn’t that smart but he makes up for it in size. Must be intimidating, mean, aggressive, confident, and demand a large stage presence.
Some singing (can be done with a character voice). Some movement.
Carnes- Ado Annie’s crazy father. Thinks he is always right. Very over the top with his character.
Must have good stage presence and must be over the top. Some singing and some movement.
There will also be sixteen ensemble rolls
Ensemble characters need to be over the top with energy and enthusiasm.

Ten Lead Dancers
Five female and five male dancers will be the feature dancers in the show.
Please prepare a one-minute memorized song in the style of your choice. Bring sheet music in the proper key. No a cappella auditions. A piano accompanist will be provided. Please wear clothes you can move in for the dance portion of the audition. Also please bring a positive attitude and energy!
The audition will consist of singing 1 minute of music, cold reading, and dance.
**Participants must be at least 10 years old and not yet 20 by November 20, 2011.**
Rehearsals held Mondays and Wednesdays 5:30pm to 7:30pm,
and Saturdays 10am to 2pm beginning Saturday, 9/17.
All Cast and Parents must attend a mandatory
welcome meeting Wednesday 9/14 6 to 7pm.

Actors’ Repertory Theatre of Simi (A.R.T.S.) is casting Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the story of an eccentric inventor, his two children and their magical car based on the classic MGM Movie with music by The Sherman Brothers. Jan Glasband, prod; David Daniels, dir.; Matthew Park, music dir.; Becky Castells, choreo. Rehearsals start Oct 2. Performances run Nov 19 – Dec 23 at the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center.
